Smith’s Shoes was founded in 1952 by Phillip Smith. The original location was on the east side of the downtown square where Malibu Grill is today. Sid Smith took over the family business from his father Phil. Smith’s Shoes continued operating on the downtown square, but when the College Mall was built in 1965, Smith’s became one of the first occupants.
Sid operated two Smith’s locations until 1967 when he closed the downtown location. In 1990 Steve Smith became the 3rd generation to carry on the family business. He used his experience with Foot Locker to add athletic footwear and apparel to the mostly casual and dress shoe assortment. Smith’s Shoes quickly outgrew several locations in the mall.
The store grew from 2,400 sq ft to over 13,000 sq ft and also experienced a small name change to become Smith’s Sport N’ Shoe. In January 2009, after over 40 years at College Mall, Smith’s moved to 1917 S Walnut St. Steve Smith purchased the strip center formerly called The Maxwell Center, refurbished the building, and created a new home for Smith’s. The strip center and the new store share a name, Smith’s Shoe Center. The location has changed, the name has changed, but the practice of delivering quality footwear and excellent service has not.
